After completing this course, the participant will be able to:
  • Describe the clinical significance of mucogingival conditions and accurately diagnose soft tissue deficiencies.
  • Differentiate the biologic and clinical responses of natural teeth versus dental implants to soft tissue grafting procedures.
  • Identify the indications, advantages, and clinical benefits of free gingival grafts (FGGs) around both teeth and implants.
  • Review the historical development and evolution of contemporary soft tissue grafting techniques.
  • Identify appropriate anatomic donor sites for harvesting free gingival grafts.
  • Demonstrate a step-by-step protocol for harvesting FGGs from the palate.
  • Apply best practices for donor site management and recognize potential complications.
  • Prepare recipient sites to optimize healing and reduce the risk of graft failure.
  • Utilize effective suturing techniques to stabilize grafts and enhance patient comfort during healing.
  • Prior level of experience: not required.

Meet The Lecturer

Andrea Ravida

Andrea Ravida

DDS, MSDr.

Andrea Ravidà is the Program Director of the Periodontics department at the university of Pittsburgh. He completed the periodontal specialty training in Graduate Periodontics at the University of Michigan and the PhD at the University of Granada. He has been teaching as a full-time clinical faculty at the University of Michigan in the 2021-2022 academic year. He teaches topics related to periodontal/implant disease and implant therapy to graduate periodontal residents in the clinics and in the classroom. He also conducts clinical research focusing on peri-implantitis, periodontitis and short implants.

Dr. Andrea Ravidà published more than 70 peer-reviewed articles and conference abstracts/presentations related to periodontics and implant therapy. He is section editor of the International Journal of Oral Implantology and the Journal of Translational Medicine. He serves as a reviewer and in the editorial board for multiple international journals covering periodontics and implant dentistry. He received several other awards from the nation’s authority in periodontics and implantology (American Academy of Periodontology and Academy of Osseointegration) including the Schoor Research Award in 2020, the Educator Scholarship (2021) and William Laney Award (2020)..

Dr. Ihab M. Hanna

Dr. Ihab M. Hanna

DDS, FAAID-DABOI

Dr. Ihab M. Hanna graduated, with honors, in 1994 from Cairo University. Afterwards, he spent three years in training and hospital residency before moving to San Francisco. He completed two years of General practice residency at the University of Illinois, as a chief resident, where he acquired additional training with the use of Dental Implants, sedation and special care dentistry.

With over 25 years of implant dentistry experience and faculty at several implant educational programs, Dr. Hanna has extended his skills and knowledge to the community through his implant study club where he supports general dentists in advancing their implant skills through hands on live surgeries further. Dr. Hanna is founder of the RWC Implant Study Club and is committed to sharing dental implant education to the general dentist community.
