Objectives

After completing this course, the participant will be able to:

Define gingival recession and classify its various types based on established clinical criteria.
Evaluate which types of gingival recession defects are predictable candidates for root coverage and recognize their clinical limitations.
Assess the feasibility and limitations of soft tissue coverage around dental implants presenting with recession defects.
Identify additional clinical indications for connective tissue grafting beyond the treatment of gingival recession.
Differentiate clinical scenarios in which a connective tissue graft versus a free gingival graft is the treatment of choice.
Describe and compare five connective tissue graft harvesting techniques, including their indications and limitations.
Identify optimal donor site selection for connective tissue grafting based on anatomy and clinical objectives.
Apply advanced suturing techniques to stabilize grafts, promote healing, and minimize patient discomfort.
Implement evidence-based donor site management protocols to reduce post-operative pain, bleeding, and improve patient acceptance.
Evaluate non-autogenous soft tissue alternatives, including their predictability and clinical indications.
Analyze the role of biologic materials in soft tissue grafting and their impact on healing and treatment outcomes.
Participate in supervised live surgical procedures, performing free gingival grafts and connective tissue grafts under faculty guidance.

Techniques Covered:

Advanced surgical protocols for harvesting and placing free gingival grafts (FGGs) to augment keratinized mucosa around dental implants, improve peri-implant tissue thickness, and enhance long-term peri-implant tissue stability.
Advanced application of connective tissue grafts (CTGs) for three-dimensional soft tissue augmentation, optimization of peri-implant and periodontal esthetics, and management of gingival recession defects using evidence-based, predictable root coverage techniques.

Meet The Lecturer

Andrea Ravida

DDS, MS

Dr. Andrea Ravidà is the Program Director of the Periodontics Residency at the university of Pittsburgh. He completed the periodontal specialty training in Graduate Periodontics at the University of Michigan and the PhD at the University of Granada. He has been teaching as a full-time clinical faculty at the University of Michigan in the 2021-2022 academic year. He teaches topics related to periodontal/implant disease and implant therapy to graduate periodontal residents in the clinics and in the classroom. He also conducts clinical research focusing on peri-implantitis, periodontitis and short implants.

Dr. Andrea Ravidà published more than 70 peer-reviewed articles and conference abstracts/presentations related to periodontics and implant therapy. He is section editor of the International Journal of Oral Implantology and the Journal of Translational Medicine. He serves as a reviewer and in the editorial board for multiple international journals covering periodontics and implant dentistry. He received several other awards from the nation’s authority in periodontics and implantology (American Academy of Periodontology and Academy of Osseointegration) including the Schoor Research Award in 2020, the Educator Scholarship (2021) and William Laney Award (2020).
